Possible Causes for Uneven Tire Wear

Uneven wear can result from a few different underlying problems. Here are some of the most common culprits:

Wheels Out of Balance
Unless the driver doesn't do much traveling at highway speeds, it's hard to ignore the effects of wheels being out of balance. This causes a certain level of vibration that can be felt in the steering wheel. If not addressed, the ride can become very rough.

Wheels Need Alignment
Wheels can move out of proper alignment over time if the vehicle commonly travels on rough roads, or if it hits a curb or a big pothole. Worn shocks and struts also can gradually shift wheels out of proper alignment.

Owners can check for this problem by driving the car to a flat, straight part of a road, then hold the steering wheel loosely and see if it pulls to the side. The automobile should not drift to the left or right if the wheels are in alignment and the tires are inflated to the correct air pressure.

Issues With the Tires
Incorrect tire pressure is another common cause. Overinflated tires cause more tread wear in the middle, while underinflated tires cause more wear on the sides.

People generally don't bother checking the air pressure of the tires unless something looks amiss, but it's advisable to do this once a month. There's no need to wait until having the oil changed or to bring the car for service. Being precise when inflating tires to the required pressure is important. Simply looking at the tires and deciding they have the right amount of air is likely to cause problems later.

A different type of uneven wear can occur when tire rotation is not done as often as recommended. Front-wheel drive vehicles put more wear and tear on the front set. If the owners don't have rotation service done as the manual instructs, those two tires will wear out faster than the back two.
